Recent Plays

Hi. I've been in "absorb mode" where I've been on a writing and reading rampage, picking up all the tricks from language and sounds that I can. I always try and hear about new bands, or old ones that I've missed the boat on, but lately I can't stop listening to Sonic Youth. I just recently read Kim Gordon's "Girl in a Band" and it amplified an already strong love. This post could easily turn into a sprawling entry just as much as it could for other writers in here, but I'll keep it simple. Here are my recent plays.

Sonic Youth- Evol (1986)

This one might get the most plays. It's the CD in my car right now, replacing Autolux-Future Perfect which is usually a permanent fixture every car I've owned since I bought it in 2006. Even though all Sonic Youth records stand on their own, the production on this one is very unlike anything they ever released. Laced with their signature dissonance, the album carries a much larger, more reverby sound. A departure from their typically linear, more piercing sounds.

Sonic Youth- Murray Street
Although it's not in heavy current rotation, this is by far my favorite Sonic Youth album. It has all the elements I gravitate towards and then some. I just recently watched a short behind the scenes type thing of them recording this album and it was real cool. A lot of this stuff was tracked live and written on the spot. Like most things, the more I learned about it, the more I fell in love with it. Rather than the tracks revolving around more obscure chord progressions or grooves - this album seems to be based more on more "standard" grooves, but still drenched in noise and sour notes. I would also probably recommend this album to anyone who is new to the band.

The Meters- Struttin

This one has been my favorite to play drums to currently. I've written about it a few times now in th blog, but it still won't go away. Chris showed me these guys several years back now. It's the catchiest grooves that even a stiff, non dancing white guy like myself can wiggle around to. If you hear this and don't smile and dance, please check your pulse.

...More shit soon.
