Stars of the Lid

I've been staying consistently busy lately doing podcasts, finishing up a few Medicated Robots releases, and recording a few projects. Felt the urge today to vent a bit about a really important band to me, Stars of the Lid.

Lots of these guys lately. It's been doing wonders for the different things I'm working on, but most importantly just for my general well being. It's easy for the projects I'm working on to be influenced by what I'm listening to, but usually not in obvious, directly comparable ways. Listening to music that's a little more bare like this helps my brain still have the distraction, without my brain overloading from the attention to so many details of a full band. With typical bands, my brain starts thinking.. what size kick drum is that? How did they mic that guitar? How would this sound mixed differently? This creates more of a general atmosphere and emotion as a whole. There's an indescribable power and weight to this music that I will never fully be able to explain, but will certainly try.

It makes life seem a tiny bit more beautiful to me for the time it's on. Rather than getting sucked into the song or production, these guys always manage to make me reflect more on things directly around me or in my head. It makes arguments with friends seem so small and petty. I seem to pick up on sadness a lot heavier in peoples' faces when I'm walking around on break with headphones, I seem to feel a warm breeze in slow motion, my car seems to float rather than drive, and for whatever bizarre reason if it's on when I'm eating, my taste buds feel like they're on overdrive. It's a truly unique feeling that no other band or entity makes me feel.

The track below has been on loop at work for two days straight, and goes on the second I get in my car. Pay close attention to the bands that are mentioned by the radio announcer and check out the ones you haven't heard of. Sabalon Glitz was a pleasant surprise to me when I first heard them, which I did from this track specifically.

I've never tried, but I can only imagine this is the exact type of mental massage to come of mediation. I can't stress enough how important this band is to my well being.
