Dos - "Dos Y Dos" available July 12

Independent music certainly benefitted from the 1985 collaboration between Kira Roessler (Black Flag) and Mike Watt (Minutemen) that resulted in Dos. Kira's freestyle jazz-inspired bass playing and Mike Watt's signature experimentation represented the best characteristics of independent music that is genre transcending rather than genre abiding. This relaxed and free artistic expression is as revealing as it is honest, a truly inspired vision without a mission statement or an agenda. Enjoy this classic track and be on the lookout for "Dos Y Dos" available on July 12.

Disma - "Towards the Megalith" Coming out on July 19th!!

Just when I thought that I was content with listening to "Leprosy" once a year, a new death metal band had to come out and blow me away. Although Disma is a brand new outfit, its members (of former bands such as Incantation, Citizen's Arrest, Assuck, and Born Against) need no introductions. These underground veterans play death metal the way purists love it played, ugly and full of aggression! Reminiscent of Grave and Goreaphobia, Disma's muddy guitar tone and thrashing drums will floor you shortly before Craig Pollard's brutally deep vocals have you swearing that the Hot Tub Time Machine just dropped you off in 1991. Perhaps there is something about this band and this particular death metal sound that nostalgically reminds me of what I fell in love with as a thirteen year old, when teenage angst and youtful enthusiasm led me to underground music and changed my life forever. Despite what your current tastes are and where your life's trajectory has led you musically, pop this record in, grab some bud lights (yeah, I said it), cut the sleeves off of your shirt, and throw those fucking horns in the air!

Heartsounds

It's been a while since I've contributed, so I decided to pack as much into a post as possible

Heartsounds- "Drifter" to be released on July 26th!

Heartsounds is a melodic punk band formed out of the demise of Bay Area thrash band Light This City. Their clever fusion of punk energy, thrash speeds, and melody helps set them apart from their contemporaries and is building quite a diverse audience. Perhaps the best representation of the band's sound thus far, 2009's "Our Last Hope" was an energetic and forceful effort that sounded like Hot Water Music wrestling Testament in a cage match! Always a fan of dual vocals, the male / female delivery of Laura Nichols and Ben Murray are among the best in the business and remind me of the glory days of 90s west coast punk. Check out the band's catalog and, if you like what you hear, be sure to check out "Drifter" next month.
